Toyota Land Cruiser winching out in Strata Florida
An amusing “battle of the sexes” takes place every time different makes of off road cars wander about in the same off road space. This always makes me smile because as you will all know the most important “nut” on any off road car is the one that sits behind the steering wheel, trying to coax and cajole his or her precious machine forwards through the challenges that unfold ahead.
I have ran many an adventure where we get a mix of Land Rover’s and Toyota’s, especially with Dutch groups. Even though the groups are mostly friends the intense rivalry is fun to watch. The day in question was one where the Land Rover’s in the group were trouncing the Toyota’s and with dented confidence this red Toyota could not make this climb out of the river.
Strata Florida has some excellent challenges to test both man and machine and this particular picture shows a friend’s Land Cruiser stuck trying to follow in the footsteps of some coiled Land Rover 90’s. Coiled is the important word here because the Toyota is sitting on big leaf springs which mean that it is lower to the ground than the Land Rover and that is why it was sitting embarrassingly waiting to be rescued. I am explaining this reasoning to the slightly upset driver and I seem to remember that he had another go later on which because of a little more momentum and a thoughtful line proved successful.
