Botswana

A Land of Red Deserts and the Okavango Delta

Where lions roar under starlit skies, elephants cross ancient salt pans, and the wilderness speaks in silence and dust — Botswana is not just a destination; it’s an awakening.

Deep in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve a small group sat beneath a Camelthorn Acacia, gathered around the fire at Deception 6, one of the reserve’s remote campsites. Earlier in the day, only a couple of kilometres from here, we had followed the spoor of a big male Lion – his fresh prints pressed deep into the sand. He had been walking slowly in the direction of our camp.

As we set up for the night there was an air of excited anticipation, albeit tinged with a respectful awe of this powerful symbol of Africa. Under the night’s sky teaming with a million stars we heard his deep vibrating roar, seemingly quite close. In the Kalahari, the camps are unfenced. With the lion’s voice growing louder, ever closer, we turned in for the night. Alert, yet strangely at peace, we were serenaded by his roars as they drew ever closer — until he finally settled just meters from our camp.

Botswana

TSODILO HILLS

Rising abruptly from the surrounding plains, the Tsodilo Hills are sacred to the San people — a spiritual sanctuary known as the “Mountains of the Gods.” Scattered across these ancient rocks are over 400 rock art sites, containing more than 4,000 paintings, some believed to be as old as 100,000 years. To stand here is to feel the weight of deep time, the presence of those who came before. At sunset, the western cliffs ignite with a golden glow, and it’s easy to understand why the Ju|’hoansi call them “the copper bracelet of the evening.” It is a place of silence, reverence, and ancestral memory.

CHOBE

The Chobe River winds its way through the Kalahari sands, breathing life into a landscape of rich contrast. Along its banks, forests of Mopane, Natal mahogany, Rhodesian teak, Baobab, and the ever-present Acacia thrive. This fertile corridor supports some of the most impressive wildlife concentrations in Africa. Towering herds of elephants gather at the water’s edge — sometimes by the hundreds — watched by lion prides that can number up to forty strong. It is a place where the raw power of nature is on full display, timeless and unrelenting.

MAKGADIKGADI PANS

Endless and extraordinary, the Makgadikgadi Pans stretch to the horizon — a shimmering expanse of salt flats so vast that you can see the curvature of the Earth. In this surreal landscape, one of our favourite camps lies on Kubu Island, nestled among ancient Baobab trees that have stood sentinel for centuries. There’s a deep, timeless silence here, broken only by the occasional passage of bull elephants journeying past the island on their long migration to the Okavango. It is a place that feels suspended between earth and sky — stark, spiritual, and unforgettable.

CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE

Vast and untamed, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve stretches across more than 52,000 square kilometres, making it one of the largest and most remote protected areas in Africa. With only 50 campsites scattered across this immense wilderness, you are truly immersed in the bush. Out here, the boundaries between camp and wild are blurred — it’s not uncommon to have elephants amble through or to wake in the night to the low, primal rumble of a lion passing close by.
